In Winter 2018- Spring 2019, David worked with textiles designers Emily Holtzman, Clare Harvey and Brooks Hagan (RISD); and computer scientists, Rundong Wu and Steven Marschner (Cornell University) on the Virtual Textiles Research Group team to create a 3D woven shoe using proprietary design and visualization software on a custom, industrial Jacquard loom at T.E.A.M. textiles in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. David worked closely with Emily and Clare to operate the loom and develop several iterations to land on a final prototype. The team published an academic paper, Weaving objects: Spatial Design and Functionality of 3D-Woven Textiles (authors: Claire Harvey, Emily Holtzman, Joy Ko, Brooks Hagan, Rundong Wu, Steven Marschner, David Kessler) and presented their work at SIGGRAPH 2019, in Los Angeles, California.
